AK Fundraising Tournament 2021

Our annual 5-a-side Fundraising Tournament took place last Friday at Shoreditch Power League, just down the road from our AK UK office. The event was a great success with teams from all over London competing for bragging rights across the city!   The purpose of the tournament was to raise awareness for AK’s work delivering vital health education in communities facing disadvantage, as well as raising vital funds to support the health programmes we deliver. Collectively, just over £6,000 was raised through generous donations from the corporate teams involved. These were: Allianz, Capital Group, Clifford Chance, Clyde & Co, Colossus, Elixirr, Norton Rose Fulbright, Peridot Partners and PJT Partners. A massive thank you to all the competing organisations for their donations. Allianz came out on top as the 2021 Tournament Winners! A big congratulations to them after what was a gruelling afternoon of football in East London. A thank you from everyone at AK to all of the teams involved for their support and efforts. It was a brilliant atmosphere and great to see so many faces in person. Hopefully we will see even more teams there next time too! Alive and Kicking x UNHCR #dreamball

Alive and Kicking and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, have come together to celebrate the power of sport to bring people together. As part of UNHCR’s annual Youth with Refugees Art Contest, artists from across the world have been designing beautiful footballs with a winning five set to go into production at Alive and Kicking’s Kenyan centre. Those five footballs are available for pre order online with proceeds going toward sport programmes for refugees.  Over 1,600 young artists from 100 countries submitted artwork and football designs related to the “Together through Sport” theme. A third of participants were themselves refugees, asylum-seekers or internally displaced people. The full list of winners can be found here. “For young people uprooted by war, sport is a great way to feel included and protected,” said Pauline Eluère, who leads youth engagement initiatives at UNHCR. “Through the art contest, we wanted to give young artists a chance to use their talents to demonstrate the transformative power of sport and mobilize support for sport programmes for displaced communities.” “Alive and Kicking are delighted to be partnering with UNHCR on their Youth with Refugees Art Contest,” said Ben Sadler, CEO of Alive and Kicking. “Not only will it showcase the fantastic art and design skills of young refugees and supporters across the globe, it will also support ethical employment at Alive and Kicking’s centres while giving thousands of young people access to sport.”  The five winners are Nadira, a 16-year-old Afghan refugee in India; James, a 10-year-old Irish football fan; Hala, a 12-year-old Palestine refugee in Saudi Arabia; Gerald, a 23-year-old refugee footballer from Cameroon living in Italy and advising the Special Olympics, and Skarly, a 12-year old Venezuelan living in a temporary shelter in Brazil. “I was born a differently abled person,” said Nadira. “The sport world makes us, especially refugees and people who are called disabled but not differently abled, endeavour for the best. I wanted to show how sport can transform people’s lives along with bringing hope and joy to everyone, everywhere” A jury of athletes, sport journalists and artists helped select the winning submissions.  Alphonso Davies, the Canadian football phenomenon who is also a former refugee and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, said: “The designs were very powerful. It’s amazing to see the vision of these kids and how they perceive a united society.”  The 2021 Youth with Refugees Art contest underscored two issues that are important to UNHCR’s mission: the necessity of young people’s involvement in advocating for those forced to flee and the significance of sport in supporting the physical and mental health of refugees worldwide.  The winning balls are available for sale on Alive and Kicking’s website. The football designs and other winning illustrations have been put on display in a 3D digital exhibition.

A World Record beating month of fundraising!

AK trustee sets a new world record!  The famous challenge of Lands’ End to John O’Groats has a new world record holder! This gruelling challenge, also known as LEJOG, involves cycling 874 miles from Cornwall to the top of mainland Scotland.  The now previous world record for a triple tandem was set at around 6.5 days; however, Simon Nasta, along with friends Graeme and Dan, have just completed the fastest ever cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats on a triple tandem. What an incredible achievement!  To put this into perspective, this is like cycling from London to Barcelona, or even London to Milan! And of course, cycling from the south to the north is up hill…so its even harder!  They completed LEJOG in just 4 Days, 7 Hours, 35 Minutes and 38 Seconds (not that we were timing too closely…) This meant they were averaging 200 miles a day – what an incredible effort!  Nasta recalled: “The highlight was the support we got across the country from people giving us claps, friendly honking and cheering. It was a real boost which kept us going.”  When asked if he would take on the challenge again, Nasta said: “Never.”  “It was brutal and triplet tandem riding is not the safest. We blew out four tyres which was not fun at speed.”  If we are honest though, this amazing feat is no surprise to the Alive and Kicking team. Over the years, Simon, now a Trustee of the Charity, has completed several crazy challenges to raise both awareness and funding for Alive and Kicking. This time around he has not only broken a world record, but he has also raised over £11,000 to support our work which makes the achievement even more special. From all at Alive and Kicking, we would like to thank Simon, Graeme and Dan for their brilliant efforts and look forward to seeing what record they break next. To find out more about the challenge and to donate, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/lejogtriple   Grasshoppers Sesquicentenary Golf Day There was another impressive milestone in the North West as Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Football Club celebrated their 150 year anniversary – and used the occasion to raise funds for charity! 30 teams of four competed on an immaculate course in the best weather of the week and raised almost £4,000 thanks to the generous support of a host of club, local and individual sponsors. Alive and Kicking are delighted and grateful to have been included in the recipients receiving an outstanding £1,700 donation, alongside St Catherine’s Hospice and The Alzheimer’s Society. The winning team were Susan and Roger Hetherington, Emy and Phil Aceret- Burgess of Wilpshire Golf Club shown below on the 1st tee with President Keith Brierley resplendent in suitably festive attire and concentrating on holding onto the Alive and Kicking Sesquicentenary commemorative rugby ball. We’d like to say a massive thank you to PGRFC, all of the participants in the golf day, and especially to the organising committee that made it all possible after previous attempts were thwarted by lockdowns and restriction. Thank you to Keith Aitchison, Dick Greenwood, Max Horton, Paul Carroll, Ian McFarlane all pictured below at the event. Good luck for the new season Hoppers! Want to raise funds for AK? There are loads of different ways you can support our work whether it’s running your own event, taking on a challenge or joining AKFC. If you’re partial to a game of golf yourself, there are still spaces available at the biennial AK Golf Day on 16th September at North Wilts Golf Course, Devizes. Empowering Young Londoners with Vital Knowledge

During the first lockdown in 2020, Alive and Kicking (AK) were quick to respond to the COVID-19 crisis thanks to the kind support of the City Bridge Trust. The grant enabled AK to develop a play based education curriculum, delivered through local London partners, that would teach young people about how COVID-19 developed into a pandemic, how they could stay healthy in isolation, how they could return to normal life safely once restrictions are lifted and how they could help stop the spread of similar viruses in the future. With the support of health professionals, AK developed two COVID-19 education curriculums. One was designed to be used by individuals or households under strict COVID-19 measures and the other was specifically for small groups of young people which could be delivered safely when restrictions eased. This approach has meant local partners have been able to easily adapt their delivery approach as the government has changed lockdown rules in London. 52 organisations across London, including schools, sports charities, colleges, and Premier League football foundations were empowered to roll out both curriculum programmes to young people. This meant that 8,684 young people were able to access the programme to build their knowledge about COVID-19. 100% of respondent organisations said participant knowledge (for example knowing how COVID-19 spreads) had improved over the duration of curriculum delivery (37% much improved, 63% somewhat improved.) 75% of respondent organisations said participant behaviour (for example doing more to reduce risks like avoiding shaking hands) had improved over the duration of curriculum delivery (33% much improved, 67% somewhat improved). 25% said participant behaviour had stayed the same. 77% of respondent organisations said participant attitudes (for example, being more willing to talk about COVID-19 and their own situations) had improved over the duration of curriculum delivery (57% much improved, 43% somewhat improved). 23% said participant attitudes stayed the same. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is still very much part of everyday life, so the two education curriculums remain relevant. They continue to be rolled out across AK’s London partners and requests continue to be received from new organisations for access to resources and support in delivery. AK are committed to continuing to provide access to as many organisations as possible. Please do email info@aliveandkicking.org if you would like to find out more. We would like to thank the City Bridge Trust for their support and enabling AK to make an impact across the Capital.

An Award-Winning Partnership with fourfeet

Alive and Kicking are fortunate to have a wealth of supporters who give their time, talents and resources to help us achieve our mission. So when one of these partnerships is recognised with an award we love being able to shout about it! Fourfeet design agency are a long-standing partner of AK. They’ve made our annual reviews, built our website, helped us maintain all of the complicated behind-the-scenes-technical-wizadry and so much more. We’re delighted, then, that all of their effort has been recognized by Mighty Ally with an Award for ‘Best Visual Identity’ in their Social Venture Brand Awards 2021. Here’s what Mighty Ally had to say about the partnership: “If not for the donate button and impact data, you might not know Alive and Kicking is a social venture. Big thumbs up to London-based design agency, Fourfeet, for creating this one-of-a-kind visual identity and web design. The beauty of the brand identity is how it visually reflects the organizational strategy. Alive and Kicking combines a passion for football with a desire to improve health outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa. Brand elements – from the logo shape to the vibrant colors – clearly nod to the energy of the sport. Combined with the humanity of its community, centering the photography of people in an electric way.”   Thank you to Jon Begg, Edward Broughton and Jon Smith for all of their hard work and support
