JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Major Gifts Manager

SALARY:   Competitive (pro rata) 

REPORTS TO:       Chief Executive Officer

DIRECT REPORTS:   n/a

LENGTH OF CONTRACT:  Permanent – part-time (3 days negotiable)

Context:

Launched in 2004, Alive and Kicking uses the power of sport to improve the health and quality of life of disadvantaged young people in sub-Saharan Africa, while creating ethical employment for adults through the manufacture of sports balls.

Alive and Kicking has grown from a single stitching centre in Nairobi, to running operations in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana.  Currently employing 155 staff in not-for-profit social enterprises across the three countries, we have made 800,000 hand-stitched, durable sports balls since 2004.  Over 150,000 balls have been donated to schools, children’s projects and community sports clubs, often as part of health outreach work that uses sport to improve young people’s understanding of HIV.

What we do works and is making a huge difference in the lives of people where we work.  We need to be doing more of it.  At this exciting point in the organisation’s development, Alive and Kicking is looking for an energetic and experienced Major Gifts Manager.

Purpose of the Role:

     Build new relationships and secure donations from major donors – within the £25,000 – 100,000 gift range

     To raise Alive and Kicking’s profile to ensure continued commitment of stakeholders and gain new financial support

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Create and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects

     Identify and develop relationships with high net worth individuals who may be prospective major donors to Alive and Kicking (gifts greater than £25,000)

     Build on Alive and Kicking’s existing network of donors to encourage more frequent, higher levels of giving, including from their networks

     Work creatively to engage influential people, including those with access to prospective major donors or those with access to high profile individuals

     Excellent donor stewardship and engagement of these people

     External networking, representing Alive and Kicking at key events and conferences with a view to developing an expanded network of contacts

     Meet agreed strategic and financial key performance indicators

Relationship management

     Deliver creative, individual relationship management strategies that are tailored to the expectations, interests and values of each person

     Utilise the skills and experiences of the CEO and Trustees to strengthen relationships with high net worth individuals and solicit donations

     Organise and lead events / programme visits targeting prospective major donors

     Build and maintain relationships with key country programme staff in order to develop compelling propositions to build and strengthen the organisation

     Prepare reports and persuasive materials for donors, demonstrating clear understanding of Alive and Kicking’s work

Financial management and team work

     Be an effective member of the team, recognising and respecting the diversity of the individuals in the team and presenting the organisation positively

     Ensure effectiveness and efficiency across all fundraising activity to maximise return Maintain A+K’s fundraising database and ensure its accuracy for major donors

     Undertake any other tasks that may be requested by the CEO

Relevant Experience

–  Proven ability to secure, retain and grow donations from individuals and major donors higher than £50,000

–  Proven experience of personally building and maintaining relationships with high net worth individuals

–  Experience of working in a small team and an intimate work environment

–  Exceptional influencing, negotiating and facilitation skills, both written and verbal to build credibility with a range of audiences

–  Experience creating and managing budgets

–  Experience of setting up a major donor programme

–  Experience working for a charity with projects in Africa

–  Knowledge of managing relationships with celebrities, to plan and work towards clear goals

–  Knowledge of the philanthropy sector, current & future trends and giving mechanisms from social investment to giving circles

Skills, competencies and attributes

–  Self-starter, highly driven and passionate; a creative and proactive approach to work

–  Comfortable setting KPIs and personal targets to drive up numbers of face to face meetings with supporters

–  Able to clearly illustrate and track progress against income strategy

– Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to build networks and represent the organisation at a senior level

–  Outstanding verbal and written skills: ability to create compelling proposal documents that clearly illustrate the human stories and the impact of A+K’s mission and operations

–  Ability to motivate and enthuse colleagues,

trustees and external supporters

– Enthusiasm for Africa and a belief in Alive and Kicking’s mission

–  Knowledge of African economies and cultures, and experience of work related to Africa

Other

–  Able to commute to offices in Hoxton and to travel to Alive and Kicking’s African operations at least once a year
