Screen Shot 2017-06-15 at 17.27.49Alive and Kicking is a UK registered charity that establishes social enterprises in Africa.  Our mission is to create ethical employment for communities in sub-Saharan Africa, help improve the health and quality of life of disadvantaged young people and enable children to exercise their right to play. We achieve these objectives by making sports balls in not-for-profit stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana.

Launched in 2004, Alive and Kicking has grown from a single factory in Nairobi, to employing 150 people in fairly paid, ethical, full time jobs across Africa.  We try to recruit people who have difficulty finding alternative work, such as those living with a disability, or poorly educated young people.

The enterprise is based on a model of self-reliance in Africa where all profits are reinvested in the operations that make them. Each factory is established with initial grant funding, and is expected to break even within 5 years. The primary markets for Alive and Kicking balls on the African continent are retail, the NGO sector, company marketing and CSR departments. Balls are also increasingly sold beyond Africa’s borders mainly through our online store.

Approximately 20% of the 800,000 balls that Alive and Kicking has produced have been donated to schools and youth projects allowing children to play with proper equipment, often for the first time. Over 50,000 young people have taken part in Alive and Kicking health programmes which use sport to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and malaria in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana.

The majority of Alive and Kicking’s balls are stitched from local leather, which makes them twice as durable on rough ground as the next best ball on the market.

At this exciting point in the social enterprise’s development, Alive and Kicking is looking for an energetic, determined and passionate CEO to drive the organisation to new heights. The successful candidate will be expected to direct the growth of Alive and Kicking’s products in multiple markets, oversee fundraising in the UK, develop readiness for new forms of social funding, supervise the finances of the group and lead expansion efforts for new country operations.

Purpose of the Role:

  • To drive the sustainable growth of Alive and Kicking as an international social enterprise
  • To take strategic and managerial leadership for Alive and Kicking in collaboration with the Boards of Directors of its operations
  • To take overall responsibility for income generation in the UK, lead by the Head of Fundraising
  • To manage the finances of Alive and Kicking in the UK and oversee the finances of the operations
  • To raise Alive and Kicking’s profile to ensure  continued commitment of stakeholders and gain new financial support

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Implement Alive and Kicking’s strategy for growth whilst remaining flexible and identifying new opportunities that may further the impact of the organisation

Income generation

  • Work with the Boards of Directors in Kenya, Zambia, Ghana and the UK to identify and exploit opportunities for sales growth across the African continent and beyond
  • Take overall responsibility for the income targets in Alive and Kicking UK’s annual Business Plan and support the Head of Fundraising to achieve those targets
  • Ensure that all donor reporting and funder requirements are met
  • Explore new sources of social financing to determine their appropriateness for Alive and Kicking, including options in Africa

Finance & Governance

  • Develop and manage Alive and Kicking’s budget; review monthly management accounts to ensure strong cost controls are maintained
  • Present quarterly reports to the Board of Trustees on all operations
  • Prepare and analyse quarterly dashboard reports for the organisation
  • Take responsibility for keeping proper records, and meeting statutory, Charity Commission Companies House reporting  requirements

Programmes and Partnerships

  • Develop new programmes within the existing operations in order to maximise impact in line with Alive and Kicking’s vision and mission
  • Maintain and develop Alive and Kicking’s monitoring and evaluation in order to continuously improve the enterprise’s impact and communicate that impact to partners
  • Maintain and develop new partnerships that will help Alive and Kicking achieve its objectives

Leadership and Management

  • Act as an advocate for the organisation and provide strong, inspiring and visionary leadership in the development and implementation of Alive and Kicking’s strategy
  • Line manage Alive and Kicking’s UK staff, and support the Country Boards to line manage each operation’s Country Director to ensure effective and efficient delivery of strategy
  • Ensure that each operation adheres to Alive and Kicking’s Employment Charter and continuously monitor and try to improve upon Alive and Kicking’s fair employment objective
  • Ensure the Board of Directors/Trustees in each country are motivated and engaged


  • Promote Alive and Kicking by building networks and relationships with relevant stakeholders and organisations to maximise Alive and Kicking’s funding opportunities, presence, and reputation
  • Make the best use of Alive and Kicking’s Marketing and PR budget to raise the profile of the enterprise internationally
  • Promote Alive and Kicking at public events, through social media and networking in the best interests of the enterprise

Person Specification


•Educated to degree level or equivalent

Relevant experience

•Proven track record of implementing successful commercial strategies and business growth

• Demonstrable experience in raising funds from various sources, including corporates and major donors

• Experience of managing a small team

• Experience of developing and delivering fundraising strategies

•Business experience in Africa

Skills, Competencies & attributes

• Strong leadership skills

• Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to build networks and represent the organisation at a senior level to key decision makers

• Excellent  public presentation  skills

• Financial astuteness with demonstrable experience of creating, managing and reporting against budgets

•Good understanding of social enterprises and their operating environment

•Excellent partnership building and networking skills

•Knowledge of African economies and cultures, and experience of work related to Africa

•Knowledge of the fundraising environment in the UK


• Able to commute to Alive and Kicking’s office / shop in Hoxton, N1 6QG, and to travel to Alive and Kicking’s African operations approximately 3-4 times a year.
